![]() ![]() ![]() “ The Fever holds true to its title: It’s dark, disturbing, strangely beautiful and utterly unshakeable. Megan Abbott has created a mesmerizing, modern portrait of teenage life today: Brutal crushes, competing allegiances and first-bloom sensuality, all magnified by the rush and crush of technology. “The lives of teenage girls are dangerous, beautiful things in Abbott’s stunning novel… Abbott expertly ratchet up the suspense…nothing should be taken at fact value.“ The Fever holds true to its title: Its dark, disturbing, strangely beautiful and utterly unshakeable. “The book to beat… in the ‘Is it the next ‘Gone Girl’?’ sweepstakes“ The Fever has been chosen as one of the best books of the year by Amazon, Kirkus, LA Review of Books, Grantland, the Boston Globe, the Globe & Mail, the Sun Sentinel, the Village Voice, Parade Magazine, School Library Journal and is one of NPR’s favorite novels of the year. In a race against time that takes her from the Jersey Turnpike to the Vegas Strip, Stephanie Plum is on the chase of her life. But what she uncovers is far more sinister than anyone imagines and leads to a group of killers who give new meaning to the word hunter. Singh goes missing, Stephanie is on the case. ![]() In To the Nines, her cousin Vinnie (who's also her boss) has posted bail on Samuel Singh, an illegal immigrant. Stephanie Plum may not be the best bounty hunter in beautiful downtown Trenton, but she's pretty darn good at turning bad situations her way. An ordinary person would cave under the pressure. Stephanie Plum's got rent to pay, people shooting at her, and psychos wanting her dead every day of the week (much to the dismay of her mother, her family, the men in her life, the guy who slices meat at the deli. Their marriage is never consummated because of his inability to feel anything sexual without feeling guilty about it.) (After the fact, Cleve turns out to be a bad choice for a husband. In the excerpt, you’ll get a sense of Moyes’ familiarity with her characters and their conversation: Those speaking include Margery, an older woman from Baileyville, Kentucky and Alice Van Cleve, a younger Englishwoman who moves to America as the wife of handsome, wealthy American, Bennett Van Cleve. ![]() Here’s a sample a few paragraphs below of Moyes’s writing – historical fiction, a paragraph from “The Giver of Stars” page 58. So, when I found this book on the Lusitania, one of the few rivals Titanic had for service in the transatlantic shipping lanes, I had to read it.īesides, I always like reading about things that usually only get 2 sentences in the history textbook at school. Huh–maybe I should re-join, but I’d need to save some serious money to drop it on a membership–I still have some of their old publications. I’d learned all I could about that disaster and looked at the pictures, watched the documentaries and even joined the Titanic Historical Society. It’s been that way since I was a kid and learned about underwater exploration, and naturally, his expeditions to the Titanic. My favorite scientist and geek in the world (non-fiction) has to be Dr. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was unsure about this at first, but I really grew to love it as the story progressed. Alongside the main plot, we also see Adelaide's story play out in different universes, in snippets of what might have happened, what could have happened, what never did, if she had made other choices. It's a book about love and loving, but it is not, in my opinion, a romance.Īt the start of the book, we meet Adelaide as she struggles in the aftermath of a devastating break-up, as she tries to juggle her feelings about her brother and his opioid addiction, as she falls in love, maybe, possibly, with someone new. I was a big fan of her earlier fun "chick-lit" stuff and never really got on board with her dabbles in the mystery/thriller genre, but while this one is definitely more suited to my tastes, I would say it is not much like her recent thrillers OR her older fluffy books. Now, this is the sort of YA contemporary I love: wistful, bittersweet, and sad, but hopeful too.Īgain Again is actually quite different to anything Lockhart has written before. ![]() ![]() Peter offers a step-by-step plan to help you acknowledge and address the emotional and mental clutter that continually holds you back from living the more fulfilling life you deserve.
